Vastu Tips for Kitchen
In Vastu Shastra, the kitchen represents the fire element (Agni). It is where nourishment is created, and its energy directly affects the health, wealth, and harmony of everyone in the home. If your kitchen is poorly placed, it can create friction in relationships and health issues.
“The kitchen is not just a room where you cook. It is the Agni Kona — the space where the fire element transforms raw ingredients into nourishment. When the kitchen is correctly placed, it nourishes not just the body, but the entire household.”
— RAJUL KAUSHIK
Best Direction for the Kitchen
The Southeast corner of the house is the ideal location for the kitchen. This is Agni Kona — the direction of fire. The Southeast direction amplifies the fire element, making cooking effortless and ensuring that the food prepared here is nutritious and positive. If Southeast is not available, the Northwest is the next best option. The Northeast should never be used for a kitchen — this direction represents water, and fire and water are opposing elements.
Stove (Gas) Placement
The stove should be placed in the Southeast part of the kitchen, and the person cooking should face East while cooking. This orientation aligns the cook with the rising sun's energy, promoting health and positive energy in the food. Never place the stove directly under a window or beam. The stove should not be directly opposite the kitchen door or the main entrance of the house.
Sink & Water Placement
The sink (water element) should be in the Northeast or North part of the kitchen — the direction of water. The stove and sink should never be adjacent to each other. Fire and water are opposing elements; placing them side by side creates energetic conflict. Keep a minimum distance of 4-5 feet between the stove and the sink. If they must be on the same counter, place a wooden block or a plant between them.
Kitchen Colours
Warm, soothing colours work best for kitchens. Shades of yellow, orange, peach, cream, and light green are ideal. Avoid black, dark grey, and excessive red (too much fire can create aggression). White and cream are good for cabinets and walls as they keep the kitchen feeling clean and spacious while allowing the fire element to remain dominant.
Ventilation & Windows
A well-ventilated kitchen is crucial in Vastu. Windows in the East or Southeast allow morning sunlight to purify the space and charge it with positive energy. An exhaust fan in the Southeast wall helps remove smoke and stale energy. Never have a bathroom attached to or directly next to the kitchen — this creates a serious Vastu defect.
Common Kitchen Vastu Defects
Kitchen in the Northeast — this is the most serious kitchen Vastu defect. It creates financial instability and health issues. Kitchen in the Southwest — can cause weight gain, lethargy, and digestive problems. Toilet adjacent to the kitchen — a major health Vastu defect. Stove facing the main door — can lead to financial losses and arguments in the family. If you have any of these, consult a Vastu expert for remedies.
Quick Kitchen Vastu Remedies
If your kitchen is in the wrong direction: Hang a mirror in a position that reflects the kitchen as if it is in the Southeast. Place a Vastu pyramid in the Southeast corner of the kitchen. Paint the kitchen in warm shades to compensate. Use a copper vessel filled with water in the Southeast corner to balance the fire element. Keep a small Tulsi (holy basil) plant in the kitchen window. Never leave empty vessels on the stove overnight.
