Best Directions for the Main Door
The most auspicious directions for a main door are North, East, and Northeast. These directions attract positive energy, prosperity, and opportunities. North-facing doors invite wealth (the direction of Kubera, lord of wealth). East-facing doors bring health and new beginnings (sunrise direction). Northeast doors combine the best of both.
North-Facing Main Door
A North-facing main door is considered highly auspicious, especially for career growth and financial prosperity. The North is ruled by Kubera, the god of wealth. Ensure the door is in the North or Northeast portion of the North wall — not the Northwest corner.
East-Facing Main Door
The East is the direction of the rising sun — it brings vitality, health, and new opportunities. An East-facing main door is excellent for families, growth-oriented professionals, and anyone starting a new chapter in life.
Northeast (Ishaan) Main Door
The Northeast corner is the most sacred direction in Vastu (Ishaan Kona). A main door here brings divine blessings, spiritual growth, and overall harmony. This is considered the best possible entrance direction.
South-Facing Main Door — Can It Work?
South-facing doors are traditionally considered less auspicious, but they CAN work with proper remedies. The South is ruled by Yama (lord of death), which is why it's often avoided. However, many successful homes and businesses have South-facing entrances — compensated with correct door placement, colour, and Vastu corrections.
Main Door in the Southwest — Not Recommended
The Southwest (Nairitya Kona) is the worst direction for a main entrance. This direction represents stability and heaviness — energy should exit here, not enter. A Southwest main door creates financial blocks, health issues, and relationship challenges.
Main Door in the Northwest or West
West-facing doors are neutral — acceptable but not the most auspicious. They can work well for renters, short-term stays, or people in service industries. Northwest doors suit frequent travellers and those in hospitality.
Door Placement Within the Wall
The exact position of the door within the wall matters. A North-facing door should be in the North or Northeast portion of the North wall — not the Northwest. An East-facing door should be in the East or Northeast portion of the East wall — not the Southeast.

The main door should be the largest door in the house — bigger than all internal doors. It should be solid, in good condition, and open smoothly. A creaking or sticking door blocks energy flow.
Door Material & Colour
Wood is the best material for main doors. For North and East-facing doors, light colours (white, cream, light brown) work best. For South-facing doors, darker colours (brown, dark wood) provide stability. Avoid black for the main door.
Threshold (Doorstep) Importance
A raised threshold at the main door prevents positive energy from flowing out and negative energy from entering. It also prevents insects and dust. The threshold should be in good condition — never broken or cracked.
Decorative Elements — What to Place
A Swastik, Om, or other auspicious symbol on the main door attracts positive energy. Fresh flower garlands, torans (mango leaf decorations), and rangoli at the entrance are traditional ways to welcome good fortune.
What NOT to Place Near the Main Door
Never place a dustbin, shoe rack, or garbage near the main entrance. Avoid mirrors facing the main door (they reflect energy back out). Do not hang torn or faded torans. Keep the entrance area clean, well-lit, and clutter-free.
Remedies for South-Facing Main Door
If your main door faces South: Place a mirror inside the door to reflect energy. Use warm earth tones for the door colour. Install a light above the door (kept on during evening hours). Place a crystal or Vastu pyramid near the entrance. Hang a wind chime made of metal.
Door Alignment with Internal Layout
The main door should not directly face the main door of the opposite flat (in apartments). It should not open directly onto a staircase, lift, or toilet. The energy from the main door should flow through the home, not be blocked by a wall immediately inside.
Number of Doors & Panels
Double doors are considered more auspicious than single doors for the main entrance — they represent duality and balance. Doors with an odd number of panels (3, 5) are preferred over even numbers. Avoid glass panels in the main door for privacy and energy retention.
